The ruby ​​is the most noble monochristan variety of aluminum oxide (al₂OR₃), a mineral known as Corindone, strongly allocromatic. It presents hardness 9 on the Mohs scale.

The Mohs scale is an empirical criterion for the evaluation of the hardness of the materials. It takes its name from the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, who designed it in 1812.
